It is the author's life story; from being born a "boy" in post war Germany, then being uprooted to live in Ireland constantly on a voyage of self-discovery, struggling to find her true gender identity, while trying to maintain a "normal" life, finally culminating in gender transition and gender re-alignment surgery and self-imposed exile in the UK.
