of 1950s media darling, Christine Jorgensen (John Hansen), formerly George,

who travelled to Denmark for a sex change operation. On her return to the

United States, Jorgensen was celebrated in the media as the epitome of American

femininity, but the press eventually turned on its star, dropping the glamour

girl and adopting a more voyeuristic and pathologizing approach.

Jorgensen's story, adapted for the screen from her 1968 autobiography, unveils

many of the complex cultural fantasies around gender in Cold War America
