THE Queen |
The Queen, Frank Simon This 1968 documentary follows drag contestants in New York's Miss All-America Camp Beauty Pageant, a 1967 event that apparently had no trouble drawing participants two years before Stonewall. What's most amazing is how little some things have changed: Bitchiness is timeless, and some men still shouldn't wear pumps. The gulf of time is most evident in comparisons the filmmaker couldn't make-this shoestring pageant is no Wigstock, and that pretty teenage boy in the chorus grew up to be the late, notorious pre-op transsexual International Chrysis. The Queen is a time capsule well worth cracking open. |
