Sexing the Label

DIR: Anna Broinowski,
1996, Australia, 16mm, 57 min.

A provocative, cutting edge, journey into the identity politics surrounding sex and gender. Taking Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras as its departure point, this documentary delves into a far queerer landscape by way of the interviewees, who subvert accepted labels of sexuality on a daily basis. They include transgendered, self-defined eunuchs, biker dykes who engage in S&M with gay boys, a dyke artist living with HIV/AIDS and the inimitable Quentin Crisp. Using their passionate stories, the fim exposes the prejudices and limitations that still riddle mainstream gay and straight society around issues of sexuality. Formally innovative and fast-paced, this is an illuminating film that strives to expand sexual boundaries.
